My experience of the rocky neck state park

Rocky Neck State Park is located on the coast of Connecticut. It includes three large parcels of land divided by Long Island Sound and the Niantic River. The park runs two miles along the shoreline but also has a number of trails within its boundaries that are open to hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, geocaching, and horseback riding. The state park is also home to an important bird nesting area for the threatened piping plover, which includes a nearby conservation area where dogs are not allowed.

How did I discover rocky neck state park?

I actually never heard about this place before. I was at work one day and someone mentioned the rocky neck state park. They told me it’s a great place to visit with your pup. I got excited because there are very few parks that allow dogs in Connecticut state, just because people think they’re bad for nature or whatever reason. So when I heard that rocky neck is a dog park, but with trails, I was very curious and decided to try it.

I googled the directions and decided to make a trip out here. The first day we went there was at around noon on springtime (march) and as soon as you enter the parking lot people are like “hey look! A doggie!!” We were so excited and my dog was wagging his tail so hard he couldn’t control himself. There are a few trails you can take and we just followed everyone with their furry friends. We went to the beach, which is probably my favorite spot in the park. It’s huge! My dog could run and play all day and not get tired 🙂

The second time I went there was at the end of summer, it was around 9 pm. We had a lot of fun here too, but keep in mind that you can’t go on the beach after 7 pm (I don’t know for sure if it’s allowed or not) so we just played on the trails. It’s very nice, even at night there were families with kids and dogs who had a campfire.

What all activities are available?

Well, as I said it’s not just a dog park. There are some trails you can hike on foot with your pet or without him if he doesn’t have appropriate behavior to be outside off-leash. Not all trails allow bikes, so be careful. There’s also a playground for the kids and some picnic tables around. If you go at night there are also campfires allowed!

I really recommend this place, it’s great for family trips or just a day out with your furry friend. I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as we do!

What are your favorite parts of a rocky neck state park?

For me, it’s the beach. My dog loves to run around and play fetch. It’s also great because there are no chemicals in the water so you can swim! Most parks don’t allow pets to go on the lake or ocean but the rocky neck is different, they welcome dogs with open arms.

The trails are also a lot of fun, there’s a lot of different areas to explore. I definitely suggest going here if you want to get away from the city for a little bit and enjoy nature.

What makes rocky neck state park different from others?

Rocky neck state park is different because it’s one of the few parks in Connecticut that allows dogs. It also has a lot of different activities for people to do, like hiking, biking, and camping. It’s great for family trips or just a day out with your furry friend. I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as we do!
